That's Kevin and I as Big Bird & Tippi Hedren at the 2008 Second Street Halloween production of The Birds. My theatrical neighbors stage the show, a loyal crew acts it out (Kevin's usually the monster), hundreds of kids show up to our city locale and the adults have as much fun as the kids.

FASHION FROM FOUR to FORTY(ish) to FOREVER

So, back in September, why did I feature this kooky get-up to kick off a fall fashion discussion? Well, for one, I like how the photo captures the fearlessness we had as kids to wear what made us happy. That fearlessness is easy to lose. As we get older we tend to start worrying about what other people think. And you know what? Most of the time "other people" are just thinking how great you look.

The other thing I take from that photo is how much my style hasn't changed. Black with shots of color (in the form of a scarf or one bold, over-the-top piece of jewelry) remains the basis of my wardrobe. Add sunglasses and a fabulous coat (or killer pair of shoes) and I'm good to go. (The knit ski cap--not so much.) It's a formula that's worked for years and it makes me happy. It makes me feel good. Which, to me, is what fashion should be about.

Denise Richards wins the Idiot of the Day award for posting her private number on Twitter and then thinking she deleted it, when, in fact she did not.

So the 1.28 million followers Denis Richards has on Twitter were probably calling her like mad. So now she changed her number and apologized for being such a doof.

Funny how I discovered The Seamstress while in the midst of writing October's fashion-related posts. And funny that in an historical novel of love, sisterhood and Brazilian outlaws, I would find a description of the art of sewing that relates so closely to how I decorate. When working on a room a flashbulb explodes in my brain--a mental photo of what the completed space will look like. Then I must weave together the elements of that room as though they were pieces of a pattern. Each piece must add to the whole and the final living space must complement the owner's lifestyle and taste while offering comfort and beauty. Since my version of sewing consists of using Scotch tape to keep a hem in place, I never thought I could understand how a seamstress turns fabric into fashion. But now I have a glimpse.

MAD ABOUT THOSE CLOTHES

While the plot of AMC's Mad Men can be frustratingly slow, the clothes and set design never fail to keep me enthralled. Plus I love how costume designer Janie Bryant celebrates and shows off the very different figures of the actresses in the show--particularly Christina Hendricks as Joan Holloway (above). Mme. Dariaux and Mrs. Gatto would approve.
