The husband and I have never been fans of eating out on Valentine's Day, when prix-fixe meals rule the night. Often overpriced prix-fixe at overcrowded restaurants with overworked servers. It's so much nicer to dine out when you can relax, choose the dishes you want and not pay for food you don't. (In my case that usually means dessert. Except for a really good gourmet-Easy-Bake-Oven-with-a-gooey-center-kinda-cake I'm much more of a french fry girl).
This year, with Valentine's Day falling on a Saturday, it's likely to be even worse. So here's a suggestion: Go out to dinner next week.
This Saturday, dim the lights at home, build a fire, put some Sinatra on the stereo, uncork your best bottle of wine and share a grilled ribeye or strip steak (Pittsburgh medium-rare, thank you) served over spaghetti mixed with extra-virgin olive oil and obscene amounts of parmigiano-reggiano (a combination inspired by last week's DVD pick, Moonstruck. Monday's Maniac Find will also come in handy here). Hmm, that sounds like a great night.
Oh, and don't forget to tip your server.
