PILLOW TALK

Don't have enough seating for a gang of friends? Throw some pillows on the floor. It's also a great way to add seasonal color and pattern to a room.

Chris Brown Surfaces on YouTube

Chris Brown surfaced on YouTube promoting a new album and telling the world "I ain't no monster." Wow, who woulda thunk it?

Chris Brown seems to be completely unapologetic for what occured in February 2009 and denies that Rihanna had a black eye and sorta dismisses the fact that he was even arrested for it.

What do you think? Is Chris Brown's career over? Or will the public let it go and embrace him once again?

STOOPIN' IT WITH STYLE

After reading my "Cheap & Easy" entry a few weeks ago my neighbor (and talented artist) Denise pre-empted this very post when she suggested we revive the good ol' South Philly tradition of Stoopin' It--hanging out on your front stoop with a bottle of wine and chatting with neighbors and friends who wander by. The very definition of easy entertaining. Add a few pillows, some electric lanterns and the simplest of summer hostess outfits (maxi dress, Jack Rogers and one great accessory) and you've got the recipe for stoopin' it ... with style.Source URL: http://thesoap-box.blogspot.com/2009/05/

Lady Gaga Wants A Big D*ck

Lady Gaga makes it very clear what she looks for in a man - a big dick and nothing else. No, seriously, that's what she told an Australian reporter.

Now, I don't think that Lady Gaga is particularly hot or even talented, but the fact that she managed to pull a Madonna in 2009 is pretty impressive. I mean, nowadays, nothing shocks anyone, but when she outright tells a reporter, "a big dick," I have to admit, I was taken aback.

So Lady Gaga is going to get a helluva lot of big dick offers now that she made her demands known. And all the small dicked men will hate on her. That's the way life goes...

PARTY PLANNER HUMOR

DANCING QUEEN

Chances are a gathering Chez Creede will wind up with furniture pushed aside, stereo cranked up, disco dancing and singing into spatulas. This playlist often gets things started. (Equally effective for taking the drudgery out of house cleaning.)

LeBron James Basket Wins the Game

If you don't get the chills from this LeBron James video, even if you don't like basketball, you're cold, baby, cold.

LeBron James nails a three-pointer to win the game with only 1 second left in the game and his team is losing 95 to 93 to the Orlando Magic. I mean, come on, LeBron James deserves mad props for this.

Robert Pattinson and Erika Dutra Had Sex

Robert Pattinson is living it up in Cannes and he and a woman named Erika Dutra were busy "canoodling" at one of the parties. Of course, this has all of his teen fans in an uproar.

Erika Dutra is just your everyday pedestrian Los Angeles resident and is not famous to any extent, but she is now that Robert Pattinson was snapped with his arm around her.

You know that Erika Dutra will be getting death threats from tween fans around the world. And yes, Robert Pattinson and Erika Dutra left the party together. They probably went to have coffee and nothing more. Just kidding, they had hot, nasty sex for sure.

Kara DioGuardi Bikini Body

Is it just me or is Kara DioGuardi rocking a really great body under those clothes? On the Wednesday finale of American Idol, Kara DioGuardi not only proved she could sing, she also showed Bikini Girl Katrina Darrell that her body isn't the only body worthy of a bikini.

Kara DioGuardi ripped off her dress to show off her abs after she finished singing the song, and you could tell that Katrina Darrell had no idea it was going to happen. According to her they "turned my mic off, so obviously they wanted to hear her sing..."

When asked if she was surprised, Katrina Darrell answered, "When she flashed? The white body? Yeah, she needs a spray tan."

Yes, and now, Katrina Darrell needs a new gimmick. Ba-bye.

EVERYDAY STYLE TIP: Dance In Your Rollerskates

Dull people a dull party make. If you haven't noticed yet, I'm all for silliness and fun, no matter what your age. Clearly it's an inherited trait. That's my Grandma Jean leading myself and my sister, Denise, in a roller skate romp around our tiny Queens apartment, circa very early 1970s. Her husband, my Grandpa John, and my Grandma Lydia cheer us on in the background.

And speaking of family ... Style Maniac is off to a Memorial Day wedding weekend with the Creede clan. Enjoy your holiday. "See you" next week.Source URL: http://thesoap-box.blogspot.com/2009/05/

BIRD BATH

When challenged with decorating a small space I tend to go for dark and dramatic. Particularly for a powder room or guest bath. Since they are not used that often it's a jewel box of a treat every time you open the door.

That's certainly the case with the Nina Campbell wallpaper I chose for my mother-in-law's guest bath, a classic 1950s style with yellow and black tiled walls and floor. Not the easiest combo to work with, but this rich black and gold pattern did the trick, adding a dollop of glamour to the space.

Mel Gibson's Girlfriend is Pregnant

Ah, it all makes sense now, after all, this is not the first time that Mel Gibson has cheated on  his wife. But perhaps it is the frist time he got one of his girls pregnant.

That's right; 53-year-old Mel Gibson has managed to impregnate his 39-year-old girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, and the two seem to be quite happy about it.

Oksana Grigorieva already has an 11-year-old son with actor Timothy Dalton and Mel Gibson... well, he has a host of kids with his soon-to-be ex-wife Robyn Gibson.

PATIENCE IS NOT MY VIRTUE

    "I'm very patient ...
I can always wait until I get my own way ...

Possibly the only thing I like more than this femme fatale's philosophy is that dress ... and those drapes! (Very Trina Turk/Palm Springs chic, don't you think?)

MANIAC FIND: Microplane Grater

A few years ago friend and biz partner Gina gave me a little package for my birthday. Beautifully wrapped, of course. I opened it with glee to find...

    ... a Microplane grater.

Oh. "Um, thanks," I said. Always nice to get a gift, right? Even if it is some sharp metal-y thing.

A week later I called her, squealing, "That sharp metal-y thing has changed my freakin' life! I'm now grating parmigiano on my breakfast every morning, on my lunch every day and my dinner every night!"

Okay so I often eat leftovers for breakfast. It's not as though I was grating cheese on my cereal. But it was almost that bad.

Previous to discovering this simple beauty we used some convoluted press and roll grater that made the process barely worth the trouble. This grater, however, slashes through a block of hard aged cheese like buttah. Supposedly it also makes quick work of lemon zests and such. I wouldn't know about that. I only use it for one thing. (Oh, shush, Alton Brown. It's probably the only uni-tasker in our kitchen.)

    I now own three.

A DUSTLAND FAIRYTALE

Yes, it's true. I actually found a non-1970s-era band I like! I awoke to this mesmerizing performance on David Letterman last night after falling asleep on the basement sofa post-Dancing With The Stars (and post-9,000 loads of laundry and 19 hours of house-scrubbing--my very own dustland fairytale). Even on our minuscule spare TV the lead singer's intensity (not to mention his movie star good looks), those Dylanesque lyrics and the orchestral arrangement just blew me away. Must immediately go check out every album by The Killers.

(Oh--and did you notice? I finally figured out how to embed a YouTube video. Small victories continue....)

Kelly Clarkson or Meatloaf?

Justin Timberlake's Mother Lover Video

DISPATCH: Dallas

I met Jennifer Lowden when she worked at a trade showroom where I shop for fabrics. For a few years we politely complimented each other's outfits and made small talk. Then one night we met for cocktails (or as Jenn might say in her best Texas drawl: "for some sippin' and bitchin'!") and became fast friends. She's got great style, tons of energy and a knack for always making you feel good about yourself.  After graduating from Texas Christian University with a B.A. in Art History & Interior Design, Jenn worked at Dallas' high-end Hargett Showroom and then for two prominent Dallas designers before establishing her own interior design business. Five years ago she moved to Philly for love (husband Jeff) and is now mom to an adorable little girl. Last year she revived her interior design business, JRL Interiors.

Jenn's enthusiasm for life in Dallas is contagious. Here's Dallas as seen by a true Style Maniac.

DOREEN: We're talking about entertaining and hospitality this month on Style Maniac. Dallas seems to fit right into that conversation.
JENN: Maybe it's the warm sunny weather or just being friendly Texans but Dallas is a very social city. People gather at restaurants in large groups on a regular basis, and that goes for couples with kids as well as singles. Everyone's friendly. Complete strangers chat with each other. Grocery clerks remember your name. When one of my Dallas friends visited me in Philly she couldn't believe how quiet the grocery store was without a bunch of Texans talking!

You've told me a visit to Dallas can be summed up in three words.
    Eat, drink, shop!

    Let's eat first.
Ah, so many options. Straight off the plane I'd probably take you directly to Taco Diner where we could sit outside and enjoy fresh, modern Tex-Mex food, then shop the surrounding West Village boutiques.
[For more restaurants see Jenn's Top Seven list below.]

    Your drink of choice?
The Mambo Taxi margarita at Mi Cocina. There's a limit of three per person, with good reason.

    And the shopping...
Such great shopping! I tried to narrow it down
[see list below] but there's just so many fabulous places. But two only-in-Dallas boutiques I particularly love are The Glass Slipper and Cowboy Cool, both in West Village.

    Describe Dallas Style.
Women are very put together. Flawless makeup and perfect hair every day.

From an interior designer's perspective Dallas is a wonderful city to work in since people care as much about their homes as their clothes. On the outside, the architecture ranges from Spanish Colonial to stately brick mansions. Inside, it's either classic design, rustic Mexican or the kind of contemporary/antique-accented mix you'd see in New York or L.A.

As far as lifestyle, Dallasites really do live on a bigger scale. Galas are held year-round. The Cattle Baron's Ball is something else—some of the most spectacular outfits you'll ever see and no two women dressed alike. Entertaining at home often means elegant catered parties. But even a laid-back Friday night barbecue will include a live guitarist or a local band. In Dallas, we even vacation on a grand scale—if we want to go to the beach we fly to Mexico or California. If we want to ski we fly to Colorado or Taos. Driving distances are so vast it's faster to fly out of Texas than drive within the state.

You've mentioned that Dallas surprises people. Why?
Dallas is one of the most misperceived cities in America. If you think it's still like the TV show you will be very surprised. It's a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city.

Tell us some secrets only a local knows.
Ahab Bowen, Uptown's long-standing retro clothing boutique, and their new store, Dolly Python, offer amazing clothing plus vintage vinyl, decades old dishes, 50s light fixtures, antique books, racks of studded belts and leather clutches, 60s and 70s costume jewelry. If you're lucky you'll nab vintage 30s Neiman-Marcus fashions for like $20.  Oh and about that TV show. South Fork Ranch is actually located in Parker, Texas not Dallas.

TOP SEVEN things a Style Maniac should do in Dallas?
    1. Eat! Javier's for authentic Old Mexico City fare, Avila's for classic Tex-Mex. And you have to mention the best tacos in Dallas are at Fuel City, a gas station on a highway. A very well kept secret, but I've eaten them and they are great. They have a pool and girls hang out in bikinis all day long.
    2. Shop! Head to Highland Park Village for high-end brands like Chanel and Prada plus New York boutiques Calypso and Scoop; West Village for trendier clothes; the Quadrangle area for art galleries; the Bishop Arts District for cool old doors and windows. On Sundays go to Greenville Avenue for funky shops, brunch at the Blue Goose and all the Harley bikers.
    3. Shop some more. Dallas is saturated with excellent interior designers and has an amazing Design District to serve them. Some of my favorite trade showrooms are Corey Pope, GCN and Allan Knight.
    4. Bike around White Rock Lake, one of the many beautiful lakes and parks surrounding Dallas. Then visit the Dallas Arboretum for a "Cool Thursday" concert series.
    5. Take a day trip to Fort Worth. Tour the Stockyards; eat burgers for lunch at White Elephant; dance to live country music at Billy Bobs; for dinner head downtown to The Reata and enjoy the incredible food of chef-owner Grady Spears.
    6. Visit the Nasher Sculpture Garden at the Dallas Museum of Art. Target hosts Free First Saturdays which makes a visit fun and accessible.
    7. And finally … a Style Maniac cannot leave Dallas without visiting the original Neiman-Marcus store!

Kelly Ripa Looks Amazing in a Bikini

Kelly Ripa has the right last name because the girl is ripped all over. Kelly Ripa is so fit that she could compete in fitness competitions and win.

How old is Kelly Ripa? She's almost 39. How many kids does she have? 3 - aged 11, 8 and 6.

Not only is Kelly Ripa fit as hell; she does not have a drop of cellulite on her body. I mean, seriously, check out these bikini pictures. Granted, she has a weird belly button, but besides that, she is perfect.Source URL: http://thesoap-box.blogspot.com/2009/05/

THE NIGHT A YELLOW ZEBRA CAME TO DINNER

I've been known to use just about anything for a tablecloth: a vintage shawl; a new satin leopard sheet; a remnant of vinyl snakeskin. If you come across a great bolt of fabric you don't even need to hem it--just tuck the edges under. A swath of this yummy design would look fabulous on an outdoor table with all white dishes. And, hello? It's yellow. It's zebra. Do you think Trina Turk designed this just for Style Maniac?

EVERYDAY STYLE TIP: Leave Games Out

DIVA TAKES A VACATION

As with the real Wednesday Night Movie Group, Style Maniac's Wednesday Diva DVD feature was scheduled to take a vacation this summer. However, given the fact that Style Maniac's only DVD-compatible TV is broken, summer vacation will start...now. Occasional movie mentions may still pop up but check back in the Fall for regularly scheduled programming.

p.s. Unlike many of my picks so far, which were my own personal faves, the film in the poster actually was a Wednesday Night Movie Group selection. An odd movie, but it generated a lively and enjoyable discussion, as always.

    p.p.s Perhaps a broken TV is a good thing--see yesterday's post.

CHEAP & EASY

Well I'm neither cheap nor easy but lately that's what I've been looking for in entertaining. And maybe "entertaining" is too fancy a word. Even "parties" doesn't quite fit. What I want to do is get together with family and friends without having to plan months in advance or spend lots of money. Does this concept exist anymore?
    It did once.

Back in the 70s, three brothers—Roy, Bob and Davehad the idea to build Philadelphia-style Trinity townhouses on a tract of farmland in the middle of nowhere. Roboda was divided into neighborhoods, each with rows of townhouses arranged around mini-"parks" of puny shrubs and wooden benches; and each with an awful name meant to conjure up Colonial days. Thus our neighborhood, Village Rounde, with a deliberate 'e' on the end. The result could have been a suburban commuter development where residents drove home from work and snapped their doors shut behind them.

But the houses were small. The new owners were young and broke. The concept of a "play date" did not exist. In the summer us kids left home in the morning, stopped back for lunch (chocolate milk and fried bologna sandwiches on Wonder Bread with Gulden's mustard if we were lucky) and dinner (chicken, Crisco-fried in my mom's avocado green electric skillet if we were really lucky), and otherwise roamed the fields, splashed through the creeks and trudged through the mud and muck left behind by bulldozers carving out the next "Village." My sister and I—at 7 and 6—were the oldest kids and thus in charge (and very soon babysitting—for about $1 an hour).

Few of the moms worked. If our next-door neighbor Doreen (one of only two people I've ever known with my name) needed sugar for her coffee she simply walked right into our kitchen since no one locked their doors. I suspect what she really wanted was company. Like most of our neighbors, she had moved far away from her hometown. And so us Village Rounders became each other's family.

On muggy summer nights, after our dads got home from work and we'd all eaten dinner, the parents would gather in the Rounde, often with a keg of beer. Their laughter would echo into the night as us kids caught fireflies and played pretend.

Elaborate events and traditions would follow (thanks mostly to Ed K., a man who could blow most professional party planners out of the water) but I mostly remember these easy summer nights, that sense of belonging and affection and community. It's probably one reason I moved into the real version of Colonial Philadelphia—a Queen Village neighborhood of small, tree-lined streets and neighbors who know each other's names and have the keys to each other's homes. It's the reason some of my best times as an adult have essentially been that central gathering place transferred to a dock, surrounded by boat slips and a dozen diverse yet very close friends. It's why I've come to realize that when times are tough and your instinct is to just vegetate in front of the TV, really the best thing you can do is get out of the house or get other people in, so you can eat and drink and laugh with those you love.

George Clooney Defends Rande Gerber

Cindy Crawford's husband, Rande Gerber, is being sued for sexual harassment by two waitresses who work at a restaurant that he owns. The women claim that Rande Gerber tried kissing them on numerous occasions in 2008, and even put his hand up their skirts.

Rande Gerber vehemently denies the allegations and now George Clooney has come to his defense. George Clooney and Rande Gerber are both willing to take lie detector tests to prove, once and for all, that these allegations are totally false.

Rande Gerber says he refuses to pay out one dollar to these money-hungry women and will not settle this case out of court. Good for him.

David Hasselhoff Treated for Alcohol Poisoning

David Hasselhoff has already made a drunken fool of himself while his daughter taped his antics and posted them on the Internet for the world to see, which prompted his wife to leave him and never look back.

Now, it seems, David Hasselhoff has not changed his spots and has been hospitalized for alcohol poisoning. And believe me, you have to drink a whole lot of alcohol to be treated for poisoning. His poor 16-year-old daughter, Hayley, is the one who found him unconscious and called her mom to come help him.

It's a shame that David Hasselhoff has not gotten his act together. Then again, it's possible that he simply fell off the wagon and went out on a binge because he got some bad news. Maybe he won't be hosting this season of America's Got Talent. The horra...

And by the by, this is the seventh time he's been taken to the hospital with alcohol poisoning over the last few years.

GUEST BLOGGER: Cassidy Cloyed

My most loyal blog reader also happens to be my niece, Cassidy. I invited her to Guest Blog for Style Maniac and liked her topic so much I'm using it to kick off my May theme of Easy Entertaining. (Parties for Pennies…anyone interested?) Enjoy Cass's post, below. --Doreen

After some deliberation on a blog post topic I thought I would stick with what I'm good at ... TOYS! I have worked at Dancing Bear Toys in Asheville since my junior year of High School. I've always enjoyed a good game but as I grow up I realize that playing goofy games is a wonderful way to get to know your friends. It is also a cheap party.

Whenever I go home on college breaks my friends and I get together, pull out a game, order some pizzas, and just enjoy each other's company. It doesn't cost much which is wonderful for a bunch of college students and we always have a fantastic time.

    pizza & game party

Here are our Top Five Party Games:
    1. Quelf—a game of completely random acts that is similar to Cranium but much sillier.
    2. Apples to Apples—a game where you have to think outside the box using comparisons and analogies.
    3. Bananagrams—sort of like Scrabble but each person works off their own words and there is no score (wonderful for those of us who aren't great with the English language).
    4. LCR—this dice game is fun to play with dollars, pennies, or candy. It takes no talent but is lots of fun, particularly for a large group.
    5. Pocket Farkle—a wonderful choice for a trip, quick to play, great for the whole family, plus it helps teach math!

Hugh Jackman Guests on The Daily Show

Hugh Jackman showed up in New York City to be a guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and although he really looked gogeous, as usual, that's not what's noteworthy.

Hugh Jackman was gracious enough to take a photograph with a homeless man. I'm not really sure if he's actually a homeless man, but nevertheless, even that isn't very noteworthy. What is noteworthy then, you ask?

It's the fact that this homely looking man standing next to Hugh Jackman resembles Robin Williams so much. I mean, come on, they nearly look like brothers. Minus the teeth.
